aejotz Goodbye Grafton Ferry 0 Jan 6 2011, 12:48 PM EST by aejotz

The Grafton Ferry is closed, perhaps for good. There is still a way to ferry to Grafton and I like it even better than the Grafton Ferry.

Just go to the Golden Eagle Ferry into Calhoun County, Illinois and then go northeast to the Brussels Ferry. It crosses the Illinois River near Pere Marquette Park, just north of Grafton.

Go to Google maps and look up Golden Eagle Ferry to find out how to get to the St. Charles County, Missouri side of the ferry.
aejotz Last Chance for 2010 Winter Ride 0 Dec 30 2010, 8:48 AM EST by aejotz

This afternoon when the temperature climbs over 50F I'm firing up my T100 for a nice ride around West County and maybe a trip to the Loop for a coffee. There's still some road salt out there so I'll rinse the bike off at the car wash at the end of the ride.

I like to check the Loop when the weather is bad to see who else is crazy enough to ride two wheels in crummy weather. A couple of weeks ago I rode down there when it was about 35 degrees. The only other two-wheelers were a big V twin and a little scooter.

I am so glad to be back in St. Louis after 5 years in central Illinois. Winters on the plains are miserable. The wind is relentless. They can have road hazards from drifting snow for weeks after a snowfall. Most St. Louis winters give you a break now and then. I've lived around St. Louis most of my life and almost every year has had a few warm mid-winter days. We call those days "Indian summer" and they are highly valued by everyone.

I recently replaced my worn out (10K miles) stock Metzeler tires with Pirelli Sport Demons. The difference is day and night. The Metz used to track badly on every groove and tar snake. The Demons are almost indifferent to road imperfections. The only problem is that now I test the limits a little more.

I've been riding Wild Horse Creek Rd to T and then old 100 to Washington or V to Union, MO. I've also been riding the ferries to Grafton and Calhoun County, IL. I post photos and ride reports at chromenun.blogspot, com ("The Chrome Nun" is what I call my black and white Bonneville T100).

No more time to write right now. It's Saturday and the trees are pretty so time for a ride.
